DEC, 2007: THIS JUST IN:
ONE OF DONAVAN'S OFFSPRING FINDS A NEW DISCIPLINE AND ALSO IS A STAR!!
Donativo, bred in Canada, outof a Canadian Sporthorse Mare, and purchased by Anita Houtsma and her daughter Ashley in the US, were very successful with Donativo, (aka Joe) as an eventer. More recently, they became too busy for preparation that is required to get ready for major events, as daughter is in Vet school! So to keep Donativo busy and in shape they took him to a Dressage show, the Region 2 Finals at Lamplight near their home in the Midwest.
Well, he" warmed up" in his first ever Training level class and earned over 60 %(6th pl.) then he earned a 65% + in a Training level 2 class, for the 2nd place ribbon; then he went on to another class, the Training level 4 test, and he won that class with a 69.2 %!! .
Congrats to Ashley who put the comments from the judges to very good use.
They were so excited and pleased. They have been reluctantly offerring him for sale but very concerned about who will be his next owner. His price is now at $35,000.00 and sounds to me he is worth every penney!
This just shows that the Donavan kids are very versatile!

November, 2007
Donavan**** has his 4th star from the Oldenburg NA!
The 4th star is for the quality of his offspring and represents at least 10 premium foals.
D'Aktion, by Donavan is doing very well under saddle. We now have a DVD of him under saddle if you are interested in purchasing this wonderful Dressage prospect.
He may be going to Florida to train with JJ over the winter. 443-249-3566.
2007 Region 1 Finals Huge success
Lexington,VA
Davy Crockett by Donavan, and JJ Tate take the Championship at Training level, and high score of show with a 71+ % and 77 %! JJ earns highest scoring rider too.
We are very proud of this youngster now owned by Jayne Nessif. Congrats to all!
September 25-30, 2007
Dressage at Devon , very successful for Rosall and Davy Crockett! Rosall and JJ Tate earned the First Place blue in the 4 year old Stallions and geldings Materiale Class! They also earn a 6th and 7th place in other large classes one in hand and one undersaddle. Many commented that they thought Rosall was near the top in both. We were there and Rosall was a shining star! Just lovely! Betsy Steiner was sitting near us and loved him, saying he was top in her book in all 3 classes!
More Photos to follow, when we are more settled. Now packing for the Big last move!!
JJ and Davy Crockett by Donavan took a 3rd place in a well contested 4 year old class. More details to follow. We could not stay for that one so I am not sure exactly which class and scoring.

While at Devon, we made an unplanned but much celebrated purchase! We ran into Don and Dee Kapper who were showing two of their lovely fillies in hand. One, Royal Princess had been a new foal when we last met at the Annual Meeting of the AHS in early 2006. We were charmed by her photos then, and stayed in touch. Then we saw a video recently. She is lovely. Her bloodlines are impeccable and so right for our program.
So we bought her! Princess should be able to join us within a month if all goes well with our move.
Royal Prince (left) , Royal Princess (right) .
Read about her Sire, Royal Prince (Rohdiamant / Prince Thatch / LdB Wenzel I), the 5 Year Old US Young Horse Champion and 4th place finisher in the 2005 World Championships, in Verden, Germany, under the guidance of Susanne Hassler, at http://www.hilltopfarminc.com/stallions_royal_prince.htm

9/17/07: Rosall ( at his unofficial debut)
earned his first blue ribbon at his first show..a 73+% at Training level, test 4!!
JJ and Rosall, Kentucky Horse Park..
We are all very pleased with how he behaved, taking most everything at this busy Kentucky Horse Park , in stride. He was such a quiet guy, even his stable mates, mares and geldings were more attention seeking than he was! We received many compliments and looks of appreciation as he walked the grounds and schooled in the warm up rings. We thank again, JJ Tate for her excellent riding of this fabulously talented young stallion.
The weekend before , he was seen by the German Oldenburg Verband Representative here in the US and he is able to breed an unlimited number of mares next year..circumstances permitting of course! :-)
Now, on to Devon! (September 25-30.)
August 20, 2007:
EMBevolina, our "Berolina"..was just awarded the Reserve Champion ribbon at the GOV inspection in Wales, WI for mares to be approved for Breeding. A highlight of her inspection was an 8 for impulsion/elasticity.
Holly Simonsen, of the GOV. reported that her socre of 7.0 was very high for Oldenburger. We are very pleased, as Berolina is a favorite, and she has given us 2 lovely Donavan daughters. Now in foal to Sinatra Song, we are looking forward to next year! Then we will breed her to our Rosall!
JJ Tate to take Davy Crockett, (by Donavan) her Petri and Rosall to KY Horse Park September 14-16.
Davy will be competing in the Finals of the National 4 year old Championships. Petri will compete in the 6 year olds, and other classes, and if Rosall is ready, JJ hopes to take him at Training level. This will be his first time out in the US! I hope to get there!
Results are in: Davy is 7th in the country for the 4 year olds!! Congrats to JJ Tate and his owner Jayne Nessif.
Petrie finished 7th overall as well for the 6 year olds! Another great job by JJ and her horse.
Red Riot, colt by Rapture R out of Donavan daughter, Dominique is a stunner! Our daughter Jill has Riot at her Riverbottom farm, in Texas. She says he is a very exciting and lovely colt. He has the splash and dash of his sire Rapture R, a multiple award winner, Stallion inspection site champion, and the talent of both parents, with the temperament that we know comes through the Donavan line..Dominique is such a sweet mare.
Please click on the 3rd photo of Riot with his dam Dominique for more photos.
He is for sale. Go to the Sales page.
Jessica Jo Tate and Donnermuth represent the USA very well at Verden! August 2-5, 2007
JJ Tate on her 6 year old Rhinelander gelding, Donnermuth by Don Bedo , rode the (2) 6 year old qualifying tests at the prestigious World Young Horse Dressage Breeding Championships in Verden Germany. She earned many scores well over 8.0 for her walk, trot, General Impressoin and Horse's Submission scores. Donnermuth (Petrie ) only faltered a bit in his canter work, but JJ explains he is is still conditioning to be stronger and he still earned respectable scores over 7.0 After a flight from Maryland, getting acclimated, and amid all of the excitement that one only finds in Germany, JJ is pleased and upbeat and cannot wait to return! This is a high honor for an American to be able to qualify and compete and she is raring to get Rosall and perhaps another ready for next year!
I was thrilled to be able to watch her and the judges were very complimentary of both horse and rider, the scores obviously saying we "like what we see, it is correct and excellent riding, and please return ".
JJ ended at 17th in the World..and finished the Small Final 7th . She led the USA Contingent in their week of 5 and 6 year old competitions.
Mare and Foal inspection news! July 2007
First we were in Ohio with Manhattan and her colt Don Giovanni now owned by Isabelle and Dave Brown.
Manhattan was approved GOV ( German Old. Verband) main mare book, and Don Giovanni was complimented on his trot , an improvement over his Dam (who is nice herself) and his handsome appearance and his conformation. "Will make a good riding horse". He is by Donavan and is Manhattan's first foal. Manny is bred back to Donavan for 2008.
After that we want to breed her to Rosall!~
Second inspection was the American Hanoverian Society, here in Mequon. Our mare Bianna's (Bordeaux/Bolero/AbajoXX) filly, Dragée, by Donavan was highly praised.."showed us power from behind, lovely face, very nice filly."
Third inspection was the ISR/Oldenburg NA here in Mequon. Our filly Duchesse by Donavan out of Caviar by Cor Noir was a big hit with the judge. She earned an overall 8.4, Premium foal award! the judge stated that with foals like this, why should we have to go to Germany to buy one! He praised her movement 8.2, her conformation 8.4 ..He loved her femininity, her correctness, everything! We are very proud of her, even outdoing her brother of last year, Don Noir, who was top foal (premium 8.2) at his inspection.
This inspection was extra fun because Donavan's son Drachen Herz, approved and licensed by the Oldenburg NA was represented by 3 sons. All were premium !! One was top foal of the Day! So Donavan's grandsons are very nice too! Runs in the Family! Congrats to Margaret Goodell.
WE will have one more inspection. In August. We are taking Bevolina,(Brentano II) our Elite Han. mare in foal to Sinatra Song for 2008, to the GOV (German Oldenburg Verband ) for approval so she also may be bred to Rosall one day for GOV foals.

Our second of three Donavan babies has arrived safe and sound!!!
We have another boy (it’s a boy-a-palooza! So far this year). He is named “Deuce” (re: Girlie’s second boy) with a perfect star, thin blaze and a small snip at the tip of his nose. Perfect markings!
AND it looks like we have 4 white socks!!!We cannot wait to see this one!
Her first one, another colt, was born just a few weeks ago, and is out of Affiniti the lovely mare sold to her in foal by Marcy Gravett, another Donavan offspring owner.
At that time she said:
I have great news – Affiniti delivered a healthy, spunky and SMART baby boy last night at 11:00am at Tudor Oaks in Barrington, IL. He is drop dead handsome with two perfect hind socks and a roundish star on his forehead. He stood up within an hour and was nursing within two hours.
June 5, 2006: Happy Anniverary to us! My husband Marty and I have been married 38 years! Whew! And now we are embarking on a new adventure, moveing toMD, new stallion, Rosall, also going to be first time grandparents!
May 22, 2007:
Rosall, our new stallion will be shipping from Germany on May 29th. After a 30 Day quarantine, we are considering freezing some of his semen immediately and also shipping cooled to a few chosen mares. If you wish to have a first breeding to Rosall for your mare, please inquire 262-243-9190. Please approved mares only. Special opportunity for Elite or Premium mares.
JJ Tate will then have him with her as she helps him get acclimated to his new home and begin his training for some future competitions. More news to follow.
May 22, 2007: Our wonderful Elite Han. mare Bevolina has been bred to Sinatra Song (Sandro Hit) for 2008 foal. We are keeping our fingers crossed for this wonderful match.
Tomorrow our mare Atlanta, will be bred to Pablo and Caviar will be bred to Escudo II. Both of these stallions ( Rainbow Equus Meadows, in CA) come from Jumping lines as well as Dressage. Caviar by Cor Noir has jumping lineage and paired with Escudo II should produce a future jumper/eventer. Atlanta ( Pepper) showed some affinity for jumping at her Mare PerformanceTest so we picked Pablo for her. Hopefully in 2 weeks we will be able to report two more pregnant mares.
May 16, 1:00 AM;
Caviar has her filly! a lovely, long legged bay, with 2 hind scoks! No name yet, just pretty lady! She was up fast, nursing fast and very friendly andcurious! We are very pleased with her. This is her second Donavan foal. Last year's colt was a premium Oldenburg NA foal and top foal at his inspection. Name? Perhaps Decora, Decoratif..still thinking.
May 17, 2007, found out that Dan Petersen's mare Scarlett just had a foal! She will be bred back to Donavan. Congratulations to the Petersens. They are hoping for a matched pair to drive together! We met the Peetersens at the Middwest Horse fair when Donavan was performing Grand Prix Freestyles.
May 14, 2007:
OUR DAUGHTER JILL , IN TEXAS HAS JUST ANNOUNCED THE BIRTH OF a COLT BY RAPTURE R, OUT OF DOMINIQUE, A DONAVAN DAUGHTER!
We are so happy for her and the colt is darling. He is a chestnut, with the associated chrome, a blaze llike his Sire Rapture R, a Rotspon son..and Rubinstein grandson. He is 3/4 Hanoverian, will be registerd Oldenburg NA since his Dam is Oldenburg. So he is related to our Rosall!! Now the 2 hinds , stockings, are like his sire, but that 3rd white fore sock, is Donavan!! :-) Jill reports he is trotting around and only 5 hours old. What are the odds he will stay chestnut, with a gray mom? Don't know! I believe Jill will be selling this young fellow, as she continues to breed her new mares to Donavan. wwc

Breaking News!!! We have made an offer on a new farm in Maryland and if all goes well we will be relocating! It is in Stevensville, on Kent Island, MD. More news to follow!
Competition News for the 2 Boys.
We have just returned from a wonderful trip to Maryland to visit JJ Tate, at her new Training facility, GoodNess Ridge Farm . We watched her ride our Davy Crockett in a fantastic clinic with Johannes Westendarp of Germany. Then we went to see Davy Crockett and Duesenjaeger ('99) our two Donavan boys compete at Morven Park in VA. Davy (4 years old) has a Blue and 2 red ribbons hanging from his stall and Duesenjaeger, (Pilot) has 3 red ribbons hanging from his. This was Pilot's first showing at Second this year, and his scores were two 68 +% and one over 70%! He is already qualified for Regionals, one show!! Davy, only his second show ever, started slowly with a 62+%.. but quickly followed with a 66+ and a 69+% at training level tests! ( if my memory is correct) So he has qualified for Regionals! JJ Tate , up, of course for both boys, and we were just so thrilled. And her Donnermuth, (Petrie) won his class for the 6 year old tests!
Dax, see below, is now w/t/c under saddle! We will go see him soon. Reports are he is going well!
I am so embarrassed, however , here I go again. Changing my mind.
Davy Crockett for sale. He is so fabulous, and has made such advances in such a short time, we have decided to offer him for sale, preferably to someone who will train with JJ , or intends to show him and be guided by a trainer. The price is higher than stated before, please call if seriously interested. wwc
April 21, 2007: News is that "DAX", D'Aktion(Donavan x Atlanta(Pion) has been backed! WE sent Dax along with Shelley Day to go to her training barn in IL, where she gets help from Kim Barteau on starting DAX under saddle. It sounds like he is a normal horse, starting out a bit shy, but then learning. Dax is now 3 and maturing beautifully. He is offered for sale at $20,000. Read more about him , see more photos, on the Sales page. Below , Dax at 2-ish. (JJ Tate predicts an FEI horse)

April 4, 2007:
Rosall is top stallion at his 30 Day Test in Munich!!
We have just gotten word that our new stallion, Rosall earned the top scores at the stallion testing that just ended in Munich, Germany . We know some of the individual scores by guest riders were over 9, like rideability, and many over 8, like his jumping scores and Dressage scores. His total score for jumping and for Dressage and for overall were all over 8. Incredibly , the Dressage Grand Prix rider asked if he was for sale!
He was the only stallion at the testing to receive all of the final scores over 8!!
We are so proud of him,and so grateful to Katrin Burger who has been watching out for him while he is still in Germany. Soon we will be able to get him home to the US, and he will then be in quarantine near JJ Tate.
Davy Crockett-News
News just in. JJ Tate has reported that Davy has just finished his first show weekend and has been a star! He was a very nervous almost 4 year old and completed his first Training level test with a 4th place close behind the others with a 65 + % on Saturday in Florida. Then on Sunday, with a bit more bravery he won a second place with a Qualifying 71%! He received a 9 for his trot on diagonal, and several 8's, including his gaits. The judges loved him and comments were very positive and complimentary.
New colt and filly, both born March 16.
By Donavan out of Bianna: Filly, Introducing Dragée. (Han. filly)
This little filly came quite early, but with spunk! AS aprecaution we took her to the vet to make sure she was fine, and she stayed while first time mom, Bianna learned about nursing, and her tests were done etc. We have named her a French name, Dragée, (Drazhay)..meaning a small sweet candy. A friend suggested we call her Gigi..which just might stick. She is darling and long legged, and though small now, Dr. Schmidt says she will be taller than mom. (16.1+ for sure.) A bay , 3 white socks, and a snip..what else!? She is very sweet, and friendly. More photos
~*~!
By Donavan out of Precious Icon (aka Manhattan): Colt , Introducing Don Giovanni
This handsome young fellow, was born 11 days early, but is very strong, and just lovely!

July 6, 2007: Rosall is now with JJ! He's Out of Quarantine, and she is "in Love"..
JJ Tate picked up Rosall at Rigbie Farms in MD, and took him home to her home facility, in Mount Airy. I do thank Rigbie Farms for taking such good care of Rosall. JJ says he looks good, and she is "in heaven" riding him.
We will be in MD soon to see him and to close on our new place.
Riverland Farm will become Kent Island Sporthorses!
The Donavan Group,LLC and Rosall Partners,LLC will be located at KIS! Horses will be trained and campaigned by Team Tate Training.
See Photos of the new Farm ( we will be adding a new barn, and tweaking the house etc.)
Big news! JJ Tate and her 6 year old Donnermuth are going to Germany for the Young Horse Championships! They leave mid July. This is so wonderful for her, and she so deserves this!
JJ is in need of donations to help fund this trip as the USEF is not
providing any money for the Young Horse Competition because they
are sending a team to the Pan American Games in Brazil this summer.
Please contact JJ if you can help! 262-325-0099.

Our daughter Jill in Texas , and I have a super foal on the ground, a colt , by Rapture R, out of her Donavan daughter Dominique . His name is Red Riot , I think..and I hear he is a wonderful colt,. see his photo below on May 14. He is also found at her website, Riverbottom Farm, on the links page. I selected his Sire Rapture R for his bloodlines, and his talent as demonstrated by many show wins. He was top stallion at this AHS and ISR/Old. licensings. His topline bloodline is similar to our Rosall, this is a high quality colt. Jill Costello Kilmartin. 903-569-5609.

Pilot is in N.Carolina, at Raleigh CDI with JJ Tate and her wonderful 6 year old Donnermuth. On Friday, Pilot has already taken a second place and 3rd place at Second level. (two different tests.). WE are waitingfor the Sunday results. Pilot is for sale and we have listed him on Dressage Daily, and have received many responses. So I imagine it is only a matter of time that someone will ask to buy him. It will be very hard for me..but best for his future and making Donavan proud!! wwcJune 2, 2007; Caviar 's Filly is now named Duchesse . We have decided to use a name I have been saving for a long time. Duchesse, or some form of that, after Black Beauty's Dam. When I was child I must have read Black Beauty a hundred times. I have several copies of the book, and loved that story. So have been saving that name for an elegant filly. Caviar's filly is just that, long legged, pretty, feminine and royal!
May 30, 2007:.
We heard from the Dutta corp. that Rosall has landed!
Rosall's plane landed an hour early from Amsterdam and we got the call from the team that was taking care of him. He is fine and will be in NY for a day or so and by Thursday, the 31st, he will be in Maryland at the Quarantine center. We are very excited and glad he traveled well.
We will know more very soon, as JJ Tate will be going to see him as soon as she is finished with her show in Raleigh.
Davy Crockett is Sold. We have just received the OK from the vet that has finished his pre-purchase exam and Davy is now owned by Jayne Nessif of Woodbine, Maryland. The best part of this is she will continue in lessons and working with JJ Tate with Davy. So I get to see him !! Congratulations to Jayne and we are very pleased with this outcome for Davy Crockett. JJ Tate is planning to enter him the 4 year old young horse championships. Watch for Davy with JJ and with Jayne in the future!!
We cannot keep them all, so if something has caught your eye, feel free to contact us.

More photos

By Donavan out of Precious Icon (aka Manhattan): Colt , Introducing Don Giovanni
This handsome young fellow, was born 11 days early, but is very strong, and just lovely!
He has those trademark 3 socks, same as his sis, and a star for him! He is out of our lovely Dutch WB mare, who is approved ISR/OldenburgNA, and will go to the GOV too for approval. He is named by his new owners ,Isabelle and Dave Brown,Ohio. Congrats!
February, 2006: Donavan has moved to the "Y" !
Yes, Donavan has moved to the Minikani Equestrian Center which is at the very popular, long established YMCA Camp Minikani in Richfield,WI.
We thought long about how we want Donavan to spend his time when not breeding. While he was competing and giving exhibitions he was very happily at home with Jessica Jo Tate at her Wyngate Dressage Center, in Walworth WI.
Now Wyngate has been sold, Donavan has retired from competition and large exhibitions and JJ Tate has relocated to MD for Spring and summer and Florida for Winter. So I wanted him closer to us at Riverland Farm.
We know he always is welcome at the Wisconsin Equine Clinic and Hospital where he spends much of Breeding season, but I thought our special stallion needed a special place. He is used to activity and people paying attention to him, and thinking he is the star! He is so well behaved and has such a wonderful temperament, I asked my friend and wonderful horsewoman, Alexandra Philpin , who manages the Equestrian Center and programs if she could have Donavan there.
She checked and it was a quick, enthusiastic YES! She would love to help us manage him. Alex is the former manager of nearby Oldenburg Farm and has much experience with stallions. We feel that Donavan, having been a competitor and giving Grand Prix exhibitions until he was 20, could not just be retired to a field ..he would be bored and sad! So he is loving presiding over the students and ponies, boarders and campers and the busy happy place where he is now living. He nickers to his favorites, the gray horses; and convinces everyone to rub his behind, keeps Alex forever grooming him, and takes his nap right in the middle of all of the commotion. Just as he always did at shows! He has his own turn-out paddock where he can still see the mares and geldings across the way.
He is now only 20 minutes from me, and and only about 25 minutes from his Breeding clinic. He has his fan club around him and I can visit often, and when he is finished with Breeding season, we will get him into riding shape and enjoy him.
I think we have found a perfect solution for what is good for Mr.Donavan at this point in our journey together. wwc
March 17: Happy St. Pats Day.

One of the kids has left home!! Our own Spirit, the young gelding out of our Beloved adopted mustang, Sugar, has been sold to Judy Jacobson in IL. Her trainer, a Donavan foal Breeder/owner, Kelly Theisen helped her to buy him and he will have a wonderful life with them!! You can read about him and his Sire , a handsome Cheval Canadienne, Dazzler from Jubilee Farms in Ohio on the MARES page with Sugar, and also going to the link Jubilee Farms and on Spirit and Faith's page.
Marty, thought he would use him as his riding horse but he has decided to continue lessons on Faith and buy a bit larger horse later on. We are very pleased with the prospects for Spirit! Congrats to Judy!
The First news for 2007 is that there are 2 additions to the Sale page.
First is Dara, and she is a lovely gray 2004 filly by Donavan. She is in Texas. See her on the Sale page.Second is ..." ulp" my boy Duesenjaeger. (Pilot) 1999. If you want to know about him just look all over this website, You will soon learn he is my first born and is a lovely and successful boy. It is very hard for me to sell him, but the time is right and he would not be utilized to his potential if I brought him home from showing to be with me here. There are photos of him on the Colts page, Scroll below down on the News page, and then also visit the Accomplishments page.
I will be "auditoning" interested riders myself..as I will only sell him to a person who is planning the best future for him. Pilot is in Florida right now with JJ Tate, so if you are interested in this special boy, call me. 262-243-9190.. Wendy Costello

Oct. 6-8, Allentown New Jersey!
Duesenjaeger , takes 3rd Place with a 67.2 %, in the Region 1 Championships with Jessica Jo Tate. Then he qualified for 2007 at Second level!! **
Just got the call from JJ that Duesenjaeger (Pilot) did a super job competing in the Regional Championships at First Level. ( a class of 15). JJ's other mount, Petrie took first, with a 69% and second place was just a hair above Pilot, at 67.6%. The weather was awful, cold and wet, but JJ says Pilot was a trooper.
Saturday, 10/7, Pilot will also show in a **Second Level (see update above) class that will count toward next year's scores/awards. JJ reports Pi is doing so much better than she expected at Second with his 2 wins in KY , that he should complete his Second level competitions soon, and is to start his flying changes for 3rd level..and his Double Bridle! Oh my gosh! NO telling what will happen in Florida! I love this boy. wwc
Thank you JJ!!
Pilot is a star!
During the time that the colt was travelling, I was also in KY, at the Kentucky Horse Park, where JJ Tate was showing several horses, one of which was my 7 year old Han. gelding by Donavan, Duesenjaeger, aka Pilot. Pi and JJ won all 3 of the classes he was shown in, 2 at second level and one at First.
The scores ranged from 69.2% to 73.7+%!!
This season, both in KY and on the East coast in Region 1, Pilot is undefeated!
Duesenjaeger (Pilot) turned in 3 First place tests at Dressage at the KY Horse Park! ~ WOW!
I cannot thank JJ enough for giving Duesenjaeger the best start and training possible!
Davy Crockett:
JJ also says "Watch for Davy Crockett in 2007!"
JJ reports that Davy is going very well, and for a 3 year old is far along!
Look at Davy with JJ up right before his 3rd birthday. JJ plans to prepare Davy for the 4 Year old championships, he will be with Pilot in Florida soon.
Is this Donavan's clone or what ??
Breaking News!! : 7/23/06
Caviar's colt by Donavan , Don Noir, just won Top Foal honors at the Oldenburg NA inspection at Meadow Brook Farm in IL. His overall score was a 8.2. (It takes an 8.0 or higher to be Premium).
We took a day to prepare and get there, and the second day was all about watching others , seeing stallions try to be approved and then presenting our guy.
We were so thrilled to have him win the title.
He is a Premium Oldenburg. He is getting darker, and more handsome each day. Stallion prospect?
